If you have ever sewn a skirt, you know that the trickiest part is getting it to fit perfectly at the waist and hips. Well, if you have a favorite pair of jeans that fits you perfectly but is worn at the knees, your skirt is practically finished.

You will need a pair of jeans you are willing to cut off, scissors, pins, needle and thread or sewing machine and whatever you want the rest of the skirt to be. I used a net petticoat I found at a second hand store and the torso of an old tunic sweater.

Cut the jeans off an inch below the back pockets. When cutting along the front, be careful not to cut off the free-hanging front pockets.

Sweater: Select a tightly woven, straight-sided sweater whose circumference is similar to the cut edge of your jeans. Cut off the upper part of the sweater just below the arms, leaving a tube. Pin the cut edge of the denim over the cut edge of the sweater tube and sew. The bottom, finished edge of the sweater becomes the hem of the skirt.

Petticoat: Cut the elastic off the top of a frilly petticoat. Pin the cut edge of the denim over the top of the cut edge of the petticoat and sew.
